Enhancing Patient Safety with Smartflow's Soft and Hard Alarm Systems

To further improve patient safety in veterinary medicine, Smartflow can integrate a dual alarm system inspired by B Braun's infusion pumps. This system includes both soft and hard alarms to ensure accurate medication dosages.

Soft Alarm: This feature allows users to set a desirable dosage range for medications. For instance, for phenobarbital, the range could be 2 to 5 mg/kg. If the entered dosage falls outside this range but is still within the maximum allowable dosage, the system alerts the user that the desired dosage is being exceeded. The user must then consciously confirm or cancel the entry, preventing unintended dosages.

Hard Alarm: This sets a strict maximum dosage limit. For phenobarbital, the maximum dosage per administration could be set between 0 to 8 mg/kg. If a dosage outside this range is entered, the system generates an error message and prevents the entry from being completed. This ensures that excessively high dosages cannot be administered accidentally and raises awareness when deviations from the standard occur.

Implementing these alarm systems in Smartflow will significantly enhance patient safety by making the process of entering medication dosages less error-prone and more secure.
